TIGER TIDBIT: GABBY (COLEMAN) ROSS

In more than seven decades of Ouachita women's basketball, few have displayed the kind of all-around skill set possessed by Gabby Ross. She is the only Lady Tiger to rank in the program's top 10 for career points, assists, steals, rebounds and blocks, holding top five spots in three of those categories.

Ross, then known as Gabby Coleman, joined Ouachita in 2007 out of North Little Rock, Arkansas. Though the Lady Tigers won only five games her freshman year, she shined with a team-leading 14.8 points per game, 61 steals and 74 assists – all while dealing with a pelvic bone injury (as reported by the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette's Doug Crise). At season's end, she won the Gulf South Conference's Freshman of the Year Award, becoming the first and only player in program history to receive that honor. Heading into her sophomore campaign, Ross felt confident about her team's chances.

"I knew we were going to be underestimated because of our outcome last year, but I knew we would be a good team," she told the Ouachitonian's Jon Neal.

Her instinct was correct: Ouachita posted its first 20-win season in over 20 years, collecting 23 victories in all and earning its first NCAA Tournament bid. In the opening round, Ross made history by scoring the Lady Tigers' first three points in the Division II national tournament. Her seventh-seeded squad went on to defeat No. 2 Fort Valley State 69-55, putting Ouachita one win away from a Sweet 16 appearance. In the Lady Tigers' biggest game since joining the NCAA, Ross led the way with 15 points, helping her team secure a 77-74 victory over No. 3 Tampa. In the regional final, Ouachita fell just one point shy of the Elite 8, suffering a 50-49 loss at the hands of No. 1 seed and host Delta State. Ross was one of just five players named to the All-South Region Team.

Though the 2009-2010 Tigers did not reach the same heights as the previous year, Ross provided her best offensive performance yet. The junior guard scored 448 total points – tied for the eighth most in school history – and a career-high 16.6 points per game. On the other end of the floor, she paced the team in blocks (18) and defensive rebounds (93). Her reward was a spot on the All-GSC Second Team, making her Ouachita's first all-conference honoree in three seasons.

As a senior, Ross broke Ouachita's career records for points (1,616) and steals (245), which had stood since 1987 and 1996, respectively. Her record-setting campaign played a critical role in the Lady Tigers' run to a 20-9 record and a second NCAA Tournament appearance. Though her teammate, A'Laeshia Adams, would surpass her scoring total just one season later (1,758 points), Ross' career steals record remains untouched.

Ross graduated from Ouachita with a degree in kinesiology. She is married to former Tiger football player Tron Ross, and they have four children together.
