Women's Soccer wins first ever GAC contest

SEARCY, AR- The Ouachita Baptist Lady Tiger soccer team (2-0, 1-0 GAC) traveled to Searcy, Arkansas on Friday night to take on the Harding Lady Bison (1-1, 0-1 GAC) in their first ever Great American Conference contest. The Lady Tigers were looking to begin the season with a record of 2-0.

In the first half, the Lady Tigers played much like they did when they beat Hendrix in overtime, taking a total of seven shots, only this time, a couple of them went in. Ouachita struck first in the game, scoring only six minutes and two seconds into the game when Beth Wendl was able to slip the ball into the net off an assist by Morgan Pitchford and Lauren Hatch, that goal marked Wendl's second of the season, as she scored the game winning overtime goal against Hendrix.

As the first half continued, the Lady Tigers continued attacking, scoring their second goal of the game less than 10 minutes after the first. At the 15:23 mark, Jessica Allen was able to net a ball in the lower left corner off an assist by Beth Wendl and Lauren Hatch. After the Lady Tigers went up 2-0, they attempted five more shots, while holding Harding to no shot attempts during the half.

After ending the first half with a comfortable 2-0 lead, Ouachita continued pressing deep into the Harding defense and was able to score again at the 62:40 mark of the game, when Beth Wendl would score her second goal of the game, but more impressively, her third of the season in only two games. The assist was credited to Jessica Allen and the Lady Tigers suddenly had a lot of breathing room, with a 3-0 lead.

The rest of the second half continued much like the rest of the game. Harding had two shot opportunities, both of which were saved by Ouachita goalie Whitley Hoppe. The Lady Tigers would finish the game with a total of 17 shots, which followed a performance against Hendrix in which they attempted 32 shots. Beth Wendl had Harding's number all night though, as she was involved in all three of the Lady Tiger goals.

Both teams played a very clean game, only being called for four fouls each. There were no yellow cards or ejections. Ouachita was called offsides twice while Harding was called offsides once. The final shot count was 17 to 2, with the Lady Tigers holding the overwhelming advantage.

With the win, the Lady Tigers collected the first Great American Conference victory in school history.

The Lady Tigers will continue their season on Sunday, when they play a non-conference matchup in Dallas against Texas A&M-International. That is a neutral site game and will begin at 1 p.m. They will continue conference play on September 30, when Southwestern Oklahoma state travels to Arkadelphia. That game will begin at 3 p.m.
