BENTONVILLE, Ark.- The second day of action at the 7 State Invitational in Bentonville, Arkansas was a good one for the Ouachita Lady Tiger softball team (6-6), as they finished the day with two wins, including a 7-4 victory over Concordia-St. Paul which they followed with a 7-3 win over Rockhurst University.
In their first contest on Friday, the Lady Tigers faced off against Concordia-St. Paul, who was just participating in their second game of the season. The Lady Tigers capitalized on the opportunity to catch a team still figuring things out, winning 7-4 due to the fifth inning, when they scored all seven of their runs.
Megan Askew got the scoring started for Ouachita, knocking a 2-run bomb over the fence and scoring
Suzie Gresham as well. Askew's homer was followed by a couple of hits, before
Teresa Mursuli clocked a two RBI single, scoring
Kailey Madden and
Jocelyn Jones.
The Lady Tigers weren't done yet though, as Gresham came back up to the plate and drew a walk, scoring Mursuli and keeping the bases loaded for
Parrish Reed. Reed jumped all over the chance to record some RBI's, knocking home two of her teammates on a single and capping off the seven run rally.
Concordia-St. Paul scored one run in the first, one in the second, and tried to rally late, but they were only able to come up with two more runs, sealing their fate.
Abbi Frakes took the win for the Lady Tigers, moving her to 3-5 on the year despite some great outings. She recorded seven strikeouts in five innings on the mound, while
Amber Oxford came in to record the save for Ouachita with two innings of work in which she recorded a strikeout.
The Lady Tigers gave themselves a three game win streak in their second game, taking a 7-3 decision over Rockhurst University.
They again used heavy offensive production in just a small number of innings, this time putting up three runs in the third inning and four runs in the seventh, to capture the victory.
In the third inning,
Bailey Sanders stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and drilled a 3 RBI double, scoring Madden, Jones and Askew and giving the Lady Tigers a 3-2 lead.
Rockhurst answered in the bottom half of the inning though, tying the game with an RBI single.
Both teams struggled to find offense from then on, but Ouachita found their groove in the seventh inning.
Jocelyn Jones recorded the first RBI, scoring Nicki Starkey on a single. Sanders was the next one up, recording her fourth RBI of the game on another single.
Mursuli then came up and got in on the action, recording an RBI single of her own. Reed was the last one to notch an RBI in the inning for Ouachita, scoring Sanders on a fielder's choice play.
Amber Oxford moved to 3-1 on the year, recording the win after throwing 4.2 innings and only giving up two hits while recording a pair of strikeouts.
The Lady Tigers broke the .500 mark for the first time in 2013 with the win, as they look ahead to another tough pair of games on Saturday. They will begin action at 10 a.m., taking on the University of Central Missouri for the second time this year. Ouachita won the first meeting by a final score of 4-2.
They will then finish their day with a game against Emporia State University, which is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
