ARKADELPHIA, Ark.- It was a tough start to conference play for the Ouachita Lady Tigers (6-12, 0-2 GAC) on Saturday, as they traveled across Highway 7 to take on Henderson State (8-10, 2-0 GAC) in the Southern Bancorp Battle of the Ravine Series. Ouachita was unable to win a game, falling by scores of 9-5 and 11-0 on Saturday.
The first game of the afternoon saw the Lady Tigers falling 9-5 to the Lady Reddies. Henderson jumped out to a quick lead, and never looked back, with three runs in the first inning, two in the fifth and four in the sixth.
The Lady Reddies scored twice on walks in the first inning, while the other score came on an error by the Lady Tigers. Nonetheless, they held a 3-0 lead as the first inning concluded.
The Lady Tigers finally got a run on the board in the third inning, when
Megan Askew recorded a RBI double, scoring
Parrish Reed and cutting the lead to two runs.
Henderson State came back out in the fifth and stretched their lead though, with a pair of RBI singles that came from Katie Hulan and Amy Halter, giving Henderson a 5-1 lead.
Ouachita posted two runs in the sixth inning, with Askew hitting a home run and
Jocelyn Jones scoring on a fielder's choice play, cutting the lead back to two runs again, but the bottom of the sixth sealed the game for Henderson.
Henderson posted four runs in the bottom of the sixth, giving them a 9-3 lead. Ouachita tried to answer in the seventh though, as Jones railed a two run homer over the fence, scoring herself and Askew, but that was the last of the scoring for the game, sealing a 9-5 win for the Lady Reddies.
The second game of the afternoon wasn't any less painful for the Lady Tigers than the first, as they fell behind early and the game was called in the fifth inning due to an 11-0 advantage held by Henderson.
Henderson opened up the game with a six run performance in the first inning, which they followed with a run in the third and four runs in the fourth.
Two of the Lady Reddies runs in the first inning came when players were hit by pitches, while three came from RBI singles and the other on a sacrifice fly.
Another sacrifice fly in the third inning stretched the lead, while two RBI singles in the fourth combined with Amy Halter stealing home and an RBI groundout gave the Lady Reddies 11 runs.
The Lady Tigers were only able to salvage three hits in the game while committing two errors.
Amber Oxford took the loss, giving up four earned runs in just an inning of work.
The Lady Tigers are back at it tomorrow, as they close out their series with another pair of games against the Lady Reddies. Action is scheduled to begin at noon.
