Box Score 2 ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – In a day that featured a total of seven homeruns, the Ouachita Tigers and Northwestern Oklahoma State Rangers split a doubleheader on Friday. The Tigers won game one 9-6 but lost game two 11-8.
Scoring started in game one with a Shelby Anderson, two-run homer for Northwestern in the first inning.
The Tigers did not take long to respond, however, as they scored six runs in the third inning. The rally began with a
Jessica Branam single, followed by an error off of
Kailey Madden's at bat that scored Branam. Later in the inning,
Daniella Brantley tripled, which scored Madden and
Teresa Mursuli who reached base earlier on a single.
Brianne Baley walked immediately after Brantley's triple, and Brantley scored from third on a passed ball. Back-to-back doubles from
Parrish Reed and
Kayley Willingham scored two more runs to give the Tigers a 6-2 lead.
The Rangers added three runs in the fourth, but the Tigers answered right back to increase their lead. Ouachita scored two runs in the fifth off a sac bunt by Reed and another double from Willingham. The Tigers added one more run in the sixth when Mursuli doubled to score Madden from third to make the game 9-6.
Abbi Frakes (7-7) earned the complete-game win, as she pitched all seven innings and struck out five. Madden, Mursuli, Willingham and
Suzie Gresham all went 2-4 for the game and had five RBI's between them. Willingham led the team with three RBI's and Brantley recorded two.
In game two, Anderson started the scoring once again, putting Northwestern ahead 1-0 on an RBI single and later scoring to make the score 2-0. Anderson then hit a two-run homerun in the third inning to give NWOSU a 4-0 lead.
The third inning was another rally for the Tigers, however, as OBU scored four to tie the game. Reed and Willingham led off with a single and a walk, respectively, and then Branam reached on an error to load the bases. Madden then blasted a grand slam to score everyone.
Northwestern added two runs in the fifth and three in the sixth to take a 9-6 lead before the Tigers rallied, once again, in the bottom of the sixth. The Tigers scored two on a solo homer by Baley and an RBI from Madden. The Rangers then increased their lead to 11-6 in the top of the seventh, giving the Tigers one last chance at a comeback.
In the bottom of the seventh, Gresham tried to start a comeback with a solo homerun to decrease Northwestern's lead to four. The Tigers would add one more run on an RBI-single from Willingham, but the Rangers would hold the Tigers to eight runs and took the 11-8 victory.
Amber Oxford started at pitcher for the Tigers in game two, and
Shelby McWhorter came in relief in the ninth inning.
Reed batted 3-3 in the second game, finishing the day at 4-5. Madden ended the day at 4-7 with six RBI's and three runs, and Willingham was 4-6 on the day with four RBI's.
The Tigers (9-17, 5-9) will host another doubleheader against NWOSU on Saturday, and then travel to Weatherford, Okla. for a four-game series against SWOSU starting on March 21.
