Tigers Split Doubleheader with UAM, Take Series 2-1

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The Ouachita Tiger baseball team split two games against the #24 University of Arkansas at Monticello Boll Weevils on Saturday, winning the first 6-0 but losing the second 4-1.

In game one, the Tigers jumped out to an early lead after a two-out rally in the bottom of the first inning. The rally started with singles from Chris Tavares, Matt Sinclair and Jace Melby. Keegan Ghidotti then stepped to the plate and hit a three-run triple to right field to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead.

Luis De Jesus earned the start at pitcher for Ouachita and never allowed the Weevils to rally back into the game. De Jesus helped the Tigers hold their three-point lead, until the bottom of the seventh when he received even more run support.

Parker Norris led off the bottom of the seventh inning and reached first after being hit by a pitch. He then stole second and was later moved to third on a bunt single from Landon Moore. After the Weevils changed pitchers, Moore created a distraction at first base that allowed Norris to steal home. Moore reached second base safely, as well.

The inning continued when Tavares was hit by a pitch, and Ghidotti later singled to score both Tavares and Moore. After seven innings, the Tigers led 6-0.

In the final two innings, De Jesus allowed only one hit and struck out three batters looking to end the game and give the Tigers the victory. De Jesus (3-2) earned the win, pitching a complete-game shutout and striking out eight.

Ghidotti led OBU's offense in game one, batting 3-4 with five RBI's. Moore finished the game 2-5 with a run, and Tavares was 1-3 with two runs.

In the second game of the doubleheader, the Weevils scored one run in the top of the first inning off an error by the Tigers. Ouachita quickly responded, however, in the bottom of the second, when Ghidotti recorded another RBI, scoring Melby on a double to left field.

Craig Daniell, who started game two for Ouachita, threw for three scoreless innings after giving up the single run in the first. The Weevils added two runs, though, in the top of the fifth and Josh Reeves entered the game to pitch.

Reeves closed out the seven-inning game without surrendering a run, but Monticello was also able to hold the Tigers scoreless, and the Weevils won 4-1.

Daniell threw for four innings, giving up four runs, two earned, and striking out three. Reeves pitched three innings, giving up zero runs and striking out two.

The Tigers (11-10) will host a midweek game on Tuesday, March 11, at 2 p.m. against Arkansas Tech before traveling to Alva, Okla. to take on Northwestern Oklahoma State.
