Duel in Durant ends victoriously for the Tigers

Box Score ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Trailing Southeastern Oklahoma State by one with 16 seconds left to play, Ouachita Tigers sophomore running back Brandon Marks broke a 14-yard touchdown run to give the Tigers the go-ahead score and a 35-29 lead. The Tigers would hold on for the win and improve to 3-0. Senior quarterback Kiehl Frazier went 23-30-0 with three touchdown passes and 22 yards rushing.

Neither team had trouble moving the ball in the first half. Of the eight first-half drives, only one ended without a score. Ouachita jumped out 14-3 lead early in the first quarter. Kiehl Frazier would find Drew White for a 13-yard touchdown pass and Steven Kehner would score on a one-yard run. Southeastern quarterback Ryan Polite would answer with a touchdown pass of his own to make it a 14-10 at the end of the first quarter.

Southeastern would add two more field goals (38, 27) in the second quarter from kicker Jake Walters. The Tigers were limited to just two possessions in the quarter, their first ending with a turnover on downs and the second capped off by a 39-yard touchdown pass from Frazier to Ke'Vontae Pope. The two teams would head into the locker rooms at halftime with Ouachita leading 21-16.

Southeastern opened the second half with a seven play 80-yard drive. Southeastern's Polite would connect on two long pass plays of 39 and 20 yards to give the Savage Storm a 21-23 lead. That score marked the first time this season that Ouachita had trailed an opponent in a game.

Turnovers and penalties would stall the next four drives of both teams. Ouachita would take over on their own 13 yard line with 4:20 left in the third. On a third down and five, Ouachita's Frazier would connect with his third different receiver on the night for a touchdown, this time on a 14-yard pass to Jalen Jones. The Tigers would start the fourth quarter with a 28-23 lead.

Southeastern's first drive in the fourth would take them down to the Ouachita 12 yard line. Savage Storm kicker Walters would miss a 27-yard attempt wide right and the Tigers would take over at their own 12. The next Ouachita possession would stall in Savage Storm territory, forcing them to punt. Shelton Wooley would drop the punt inside the 10 and the Tigers would down it at the SOSU one yard line.

Southeastern would be forced to punt on the next possession and the Tigers' Etauj Allen would return it 24 yard to Southeastern 26. On a third and 17, Frazier would connect with White for a 29-yard reception and give the Tigers a first and goal from the SOSU four yard line. On the ensuing play, Ouachita would fumble the ball into the end zone where Southeastern would recover.

With 4:10 remaining, Southeastern would drive 80 yards in 3:12 and score on a nine-yard run by Ronnie Green to give the Savage Storm a 28-29 lead. A costly celebration penalty after the score and the ensuing kickoff going out of bounds would give Ouachita the ball on the 50 yard line with 58 seconds remaining.

A pass interference call on a third and 20 would give the Tigers new life and a first down at the SOSU 31 yard line. Frazier and Marks would get the carries on the next three plays and the Tigers would have a second and seven with 16 seconds left. On the next carry, Brandon Marks would break free and take it to the end zone for the go-ahead score.

Zack Mitchell would intercept the final desperation pass from Southeastern as time expired to secure the 35-29 victory.

Brandon Marks finished with 83 yards rushing and the winning touchdown. Steven Kehner gained 125 yards on 20 carries and scored once.

Drew White finished with eight catches for 121 yards and a touchdown. Jalen Jones and Ke'Vonate Pope each had five grabs and a score.

Linebacker Mike Williamson lead all tacklers with 14, 10 solo. He also had one tackle for loss.

Both teams combined for 152 plays for 1,050 yards of total offense.

Ouachita returns home next week to defend Cliff Harris Stadium against the Bulldogs of Southwestern Oklahoma State. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
