Henderson takes series from Tigers

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. - Ouachita baseball ended its season on Sunday, falling in both games of a doubleheader to the Henderson State Reddies. The Tigers dropped game one, 9-2, and lost the third game of the series, 5-4, after a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh. Henderson State took the series, 2-1, after Ouachita took a 7-3 victory on Saturday.

Ouachita (16-33, 12-21 GAC) took the first lead of the day, as Jakahari Howell singled to center field in the second inning of game one to score Aaron Studdard. Studdard led off the inning with a single and was later pushed to second on Weston Smith's first career hit.

Henderson (27-23, 20-13 GAC) answered, however, with one run in each of the next four innings. The Reddies then scored two in the sixth and two in the seventh to take a commanding 8-1 lead. In the eighth inning, Preston Speers picked up his team-leading 30th run batted in of the season, scoring Will Wallace on a single. Henderson once again responded, though with a run in the eighth to extend its lead back to seven.

Dillon Groves led off the top of the ninth with a double to center field, but three consecutive outs ended the contest with the Reddies on top.

John Franklin Matros was handed the loss for the Tigers, while Jorden Lawrence and Kason Kimbrell combined for 2.2 innings on the mound. Howell led Ouachita with three hits in the loss.

The Tigers fell behind early in the second game, as Henderson scored two runs in the first inning on a double. Ouachita was held without a hit until Groves broke up the no-hitter with a single in the top of the fifth inning. Groves advanced to second after Studdard walked, but Henderson escaped the inning still holding a two-run lead.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Reddies extended its lead to three runs on an RBI-single. The Tigers were then retired in order for the fourth time in the top of the sixth.

With just three outs remaining in the season, Ouachita began its comeback with a single by Wallace to lead off the top of the seventh. Ryan Hammer pushed Wallace to second after a walk, and a single by Groves loaded the bases with one out. Austin white then entered the game as a pinch hitter and provided an immediate spark, doubling to right field to score Wallace and Hammer. Ty Owens followed with a sacrifice fly to tie the score, 3-3, and Howell doubled off the center field wall with two outs to give Ouachita a 4-3 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh.

The Tigers recorded two outs in the first three batters of the half-inning, but single to center field allowed a run to score and tie the game. Henderson then stole the victory on a single to left field, scoring the fifth run from second.

Despite 6.2 innings on the mound, Connor Reed took the loss for Ouachita. Reed allowed just five hits and struck out a career-high 12 batters.

With the losses, Ouachita drops to ninth place in the Great American Conference, ending its season.
