Offense to little to late for Tigers

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SHAWNEE, Okla. – The Ouachita Baptist baseball team dropped a pair of games to Oklahoma Baptist, 5-3 and 5-2 on Saturday afternoon to begin Great American Conference Play.

It is the second season in a row in which Ouachita (3-9, 0-2 GAC) started out conference play 0-2.

Freshman Tyler Riebock (Rockwall, Texas) had another great day at the plate as he collected 4-hits and an RBI in the losses on Saturday.

GAME ONE: Ouachita Baptist 3, Oklahoma Baptist 5
The bottom of the second inning started out with a bang for the Oklahoma Baptist (8-2, 2-0 GAC) offense. Clean-up hitter Josh Timms hit a leadoff inside the park homerun to right field, to open up the scoring for both teams in the contest.

In the top of the fifth inning, the Tigers threatened with the bases loaded and only one out in the inning. Unfortunately, for the Tigers the final two batters of the inning struck out swinging and flew out to centerfield.

In the bottom, half of the fifth inning the Bison tacked on their second run of the contest. McKee tripled to centerfield with one out and two batters latter Bloomfield doubled to right centerfield to give Oklahoma Baptist a 2-0 lead.

The Bison tacked on a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth to extend the lead to four runs.

In the top of the seventh inning, the Tigers offense came to life as they scored three runs and pulled within a run of the Bison. Aaron Studdard (Denton, Texas) hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Louis Steen (Southaven, Miss.) in from third. Riebock was hit-by-a-pitch and Kyle Alexander (Conway, Ark.) walked with the bases loaded to bring in the other two scores.

In the bottom half of the inning Zane Gelphman hit the Bison's second homerun of the afternoon to extend the lead to 5-3. Nick Burnham came in and shut the door to pick up his first save of the season.

Riebock finished game one going 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI. John Franklin Matros (Arkadelphia, Ark.) picked up his second loss of the season after pitching 6 innings, giving up 4 runs on 5 hits.

GAME TWO: Ouachita 2, Oklahoma Baptist 5
In the bottom of the first inning, Gelphman launched his second homerun of the afternoon to give the Bison a 1-0 advantage.

Roy Verdejo hit an RBI double to left center to Gozzo from third base in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Bison looked to build on their 2-0 lead with no outs in the inning. Brett
Berghammer did just that as he ripped a two out pitch to centerfield to bring home Verdejo.

Matt Poulin hit a 2-RBI double to centerfield to give the Bison a 5-0 advantage in the bottom of the sixth inning.

The Tigers offense came alive though in the top of the 7th inning as they tried to mount a comeback against the Bison.

Cade McBride (Prosper, Texas) started-off the inning with a single to centerfield. Chandler Blake (Frisco, Texas) came in to pinch run for the freshman. Ty Owens (El Dorado, Ark.) was hit-by-a-pitch to put runners on first and second and no outs in the inning.

Logan Huneycutt (Arkadelphia, Ark.) singled to right field to load up the bases, still with no one out in the inning. Blake came around to score on a wild pitch from the Bison to give the Tigers their first run of the game.

Owens came around to score on a throwing error by the Bison's shortstop. The Tigers went down swinging as two out of the final three batters flew out to end the game.
Riebock, Huneycutt and Jakahari Howell (Arkadelphia, Ark.) ended the second game with 2-hits each. Tyler Duck (Flower Mound, Texas) picked up the loss after a 5-inning performance on the mound. Duck allowed 3-runs off 5-hits.

The conclusion of the three game series will be tomorrow afternoon, with a 1 p.m. first pitch time.
