Box Score 3 SPRINGFIELD, MO. – The Ouachita Baptist softball team traveled to Springfield, MO this weekend to take on Drury University and Wisconsin-Parkside in the Drury Invitational Tournament.
Ouachita (4-3) went 2-1 over the weekend with a 6-2 win over host school Drury on Saturday evening and a series split with Wisconsin-Parkside, 7-1, 0-7 on Sunday morning.
GAME ONE: Ouachita 6, Drury 2
The game was scoreless between the two squads until the top of the third inning. Page Purifoy (Farmington, Ark.) tripled with one out in the third. Purifoy did not have to wait
long on third base as
Kelly Powell (Flower Mound, Texas) hit an RBI single to give the Tigers their first run of the afternoon.
The Panthers responded though in the bottom of the third with a run of their own. Destiny Bolen singled to the outfield to bring in Jacy Ummel from second base.
The score did not stay tied at one for long though. Samantha Ortiz (North Richland Hills, Texas) doubled to begin the top of the fourth inning. Valery Cotton (Bauxite, Ark.) came into run for Ortiz at second base, Natalie Jackson (Mansfield, Texas) then doubled to bring the Tigers second run of the afternoon. Jackson came around to score on an error by the shortstop to give the Tigers a 3-1 lead.
Drury answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning to get within one of the Tigers. The Panthers never came close to tying the game again.
Ouachita tacked on a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning and a run in the top of the seventh to give the Tigers the win.
A quartet of Tigers had two hit performances in the victory over Drury. Jackson was the top hitter in game one with a pair of RBI hits.
Sarah Chamberlain (Shreveport, La.) picked up her third win of the season with a 6-inning performance. The freshman gave up 2-runs, while striking out 7-batters in the process.
GAME TWO: Ouachita 7, Wisconsin-Parkside 1
Ouachita got on the board early and often against Wisconsin-Parkside in game one of Sunday's double-header. Sloane Precure (Canyon, Texas) singled to left and then came around to score on a wild pitch in the first inning.
The Tigers offense exploded in the top of the fourth inning with 4 runs off of 5 hits.
Gabby Gonzalez (Alice, Texas) hit a two-RBI triple to right field and Tobi Finley had an RBI single in the inning.
Wisconsin-Parkside picked up their loan run of the contest in the bottom of the 6
th inning. Ouachita tacked on a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to complete the scoring for the Tigers.
Precure and
Sarah Johnson (Mount Vernon, Texas) each had a pair of hits in the contest with an RBI to lead the team in hitting.
Marissa Butler (Plano, Texas) picked up her second victory of the season, throwing a complete game. Butler gave up 1-run, off 5-hits while striking out 8-batters.
GAME THREE: Ouachita 0, Wisconsin-Parkside 7
There was not a lot to cheer about in the final game of the weekend for the Tigers. Wisconsin-Parkside scored all 7 of their runs in the first 4-innings of the contest.
Chamberlain picked up just her second loss of the season and only pitched 2.1 innings. Lexi Brooks, Johnson and Finley were the only Tigers to record a hit in the second game.
The Ouachita Tigers softball team will begin Great American Conference play next weekend, when they travel to Bethany, Okla to take on Southern Nazarene. Friday's double header is slated to begin at 1:00 p.m.
