Triumphant Tigers start out Conference Play 2-0

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BETHANY, Okla. – The Ouachita Baptist softball team defeated Southern Nazarene 6-1 and 4-0 on Sunday afternoon.

The two victories were the first Great American Conference wins of the season for Ouachita (6-3, 2-0 GAC). It was the second season in a row in which the Tigers had started out the season with a pair of victories against Southern Nazarene (3-9, 0-2 GAC).

Paige Purifoy (Farmington, Ark.) had a six hit day to lead the Ouachita offense. Marissa Butler (Plano, Texas) and Sarah Chamberlain (Shreveport, La.) each threw a complete game to pick up the win inside the circle.

Game ONE: Ouachita 6, SNU 1
The game was scoreless the opening two innings before the Tigers put the first run of the game on the board in the top of the third. Kelly Powell (Flower Mound, Texas) led off the inning with a double to left centerfield. One batter later Sloane Precure (Canyon, Texas) hit an RBI single down the third base line.

Southern Nazarene tied the game up in the bottom half of the inning with a sacrifice fly to left field.

Gabby Gonzalez (Alice, Texas) homered to centerfield to give the Tigers a 2-1 advantage. It was a lead that the Tigers would not surrender the rest of the game.

Ouachita's offense put the game out of reach in the fifth inning. Sarah Johnson (Mount Vernon, Texas) hit her second homerun of the season. This time it was a two-run dinger to left field to give the Tigers a 4-1 edge.

Madison Crosby (Sheridan, Arkansas) added a 2-RBI single to conclude the Tigers scoring in the contest.

A trio of Tigers had multi-hit days, Purifoy was 3-for-4 on the day, Gonzalez and Precure each had a pair of hits in the game as well.

Butler picked up her third win of the season after pitching a complete game. The junior gave up just one earned run while striking out five.

Game Two: Ouachita 4, SNU 0
In the second game of the double header, the runs came few and far between for Ouachita.

With one out in the top of the second inning, Gonzalez laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Natalie Jackson (Mansfield, Texas) over to second. Tobi Finley (Sheridan, Ark.) then singled down the first base line to give Ouachita the first run of the game.

Gonzalez led off the top of the fourth with a double to centerfield. One batter later and Purifoy singled to left centerfield to give the Tigers a 2-0 advantage.

The Tigers scored on a pair of bases loaded walks in the sixth inning to take the second game of the series.

Purifoy and Finley were the top hitters for the Tigers in the second game. Purifoy finished 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, while Finley was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

Chamberlain pitched a complete game shutout to pick up her third win of the season. The freshman struck out 8 batters and only surrendered 2 hits in the contest.

Ouachita and Southern Nazarene will play their second double header of the weekend on Monday afternoon.
