Box Score 2 ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The Ouachita Tiger softball team picked up their first victories of the season with an 8-1 win over Lincoln and a 7-2 win over Christian Brothers in the night cap.
Game One: Ouachita 8, Lincoln 1
The Ouachita Tigers began the top of the first with two routine ground ball outs to start out the game. Sarah Chamberlain (Shreveport, La.) then walked the next batter, which kept the inning alive for Lincoln. Tori Nienhuesser then singled to move Jordan Lawson over to second base. Emily Williams then stepped to the plate and crushed an RBI single to right field to give the Blue Tigers an early 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the first inning Sloane Precure (Canyon, Texas) fouled away a few pitches before bombing a 1-2 pitch over the left field fence to tie the game at 1-1.
Samantha Ortiz (North Richland Hills, Texas) started out the bottom of the fourth inning with a leadoff single.
Gabby Gonzalez (Alice, Texas) came into pitch run for Ortiz and stole second on a 1-0 count to put herself in scoring position for the Tigers. Delayne Patton then threw the ball to the backstop on a wild pitch that allowed Gonzalez to advance to third base.
Natalie Jackson (Mansfield, Texas) stepped up to the plate with one out in the inning and laid down the perfect suicide squeeze that gave the Tigers a 2-1 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth inning Ouachita broke the game open by batting around in the order. Page Purifoy (Farmington, Ark.) started the inning off with a single up the middle.
Kelly Powell (Flower Mound, Texas) and Precure followed with singles of their own to set up a bases loaded situation with no outs.
Sarah Johnson (Mount Vernon, Texas) took two powerful hacks before connecting on a pitch that she launched off the top of the centerfield wall. Purifoy and Powell came into score on the double while Precure moved over to third base.
The Tigers were not done though as Ortiz picked up an RBI on a fielder's choice when the Blue Tigers attempted to get a Ouachita runner out at the plate. Lexi Brooks (Mena, Ark.) then hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Johnson from third. A few batters later
Madison Crosby (Sheridan, Ark.) reached first as the centerfielder dropped what would have been the final out of the inning.
Finley scored on the error by the centerfielder. When it was all said and done the Tigers had pounded out 5 runs on 6 hits. The Blue Tigers never threatened the rest of the game as Ouachita picked up their first victory of the 2018 campaign.
Precure went 3-4 at the plate in game number one, while Chamberlain pitched a complete game allowing just one run off of two hits. The freshman pitcher also collected 10 strikeouts in the game.
GAME 2: Ouachita 7, Christian Brothers 2
The first inning woes continued for the Tigers in the second game as they allowed Christian Brothers to put up a pair of runs in the opening frame.
Ouachita responded though as Powell lead off the bottom of the first with a single. Precure then laid down the sacrifice bunt to move Powell into scoring position. Johnson stepped into the batters box and smacked a 1-out RBI double to centerfield. The Tigers and Buccaneers ended the first inning tied 1-1.
The second inning started out with a bang for the Tigers as Jackson doubled down the left field line to lead-off the inning. Purifoy then singled through the left side of the infield and moved Jackson over to third in the process.
Halley Ryburn (Monticello, Ark.) then bunted the ball and placed it perfectly between a circle of Buccaneer infielders. Ryburn reached first with an RBI single, with no outs in the inning.
Powell then came up to the plate and placed a bunt perfectly between the pitcher and the first baseman to bring in another run. After Precure singled to centerfield, Johnson walked up to the plate and hit a three-run bomb over the centerfield fence to give the Tigers a 6-2 lead.
Ouachita tacked on another in fourth inning to give the Tigers a 7-2 advantage. Johnson finished game two by going 3-for-3 at the plate, with two extra base hits and four RBI's in the game.
Marissa Butler picked up the victory after pitching 5.1 innings.
The Tigers will take a weekend off before travelling to Bentonville, Ark. to participate in the UAM 8-State Classic on Feb. 16.
