Box Score 2 ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The Ouachita softball team came away with a series split 1-8, 2-1 against No. 6 Southern Arkansas on Friday evening at Sully Anderson Field.
Ouachita (13-16, 9-13) broke a 10-game losing streak to Southern Arkansas (30-4, 19-3) with a 2-1 victory in game two of the double header. The win was also the first victory at Sully Anderson Field against the Muleriders since Feb. 28, 2014.
Marissa Butler (Plano, Texas) was dealing in the circle for the Tigers. The junior picked up her third complete game victory of the season and tied a season high in strikeouts with eight. Butler only allowed four total hits to a potent Southern Arkansas lineup.
Sarah Johnson (Mount Vernon, Texas) was the offensive player of the evening. The senior catcher went 3-for-6 on the afternoon with three RBI's. Two of the RBI's came on a base knock up the middle in game two and that proved to be the difference maker in the game.
Game One: Southern Arkansas 8, Ouachita 1
Southern Arkansas flexed their muscles in the first inning of game one as they scored four runs in the opening frame. Faith Otts and Megan Godoyo each had two-RBI doubles down the right field line to rattle Ouachita starting pitcher Sarah Chamberlain (Shreveport, La.).
The Tigers started a two out rally in the bottom of the third inning.
Kelly Powell (Flower Mound, Texas) singled to left center to keep the inning alive, Sloane Precure (Canyon, Texas) then singled down the left field line to put a runner in scoring position for Ouachita. Johnson came through with a base knock to center field as Powell scored on the play.
Godoyo lead off the top of the fourth inning with a homerun to left field. The homerun put the Muleriders up 5-1 and it was their 67
th homerun on the season. Southern Arkansas tacked on another run two batters later to make it 6-1.
Sarah Pitre hit a two-run home run to center field to cap off the scoring in game one. The Tigers went down in order to finish the game.
Powell finished the game a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate for the Tigers offense.
Victoria Taylor picked up her 13
th victory of the season, as she remains undefeated during the 2018 campaign for Southern Arkansas.
Game Two: Southern Arkansas 1, Ouachita 2
The second game of the afternoon was the exact opposite of the first game, as a pitchers dual broke out between the two teams.
Butler was dealing in the circle from the start as she struck out five of the first seven batters she faced.
Brooke Ford-Nelson was Butler's counterpart in the circle and she allowed just one hit through two innings of play. Ford-Nelson came into the matchup with a 0.84 season era.
Pitre broke up a string of five strikeouts for Butler in the top of the third inning, with a homerun to left center field. Butler did not lose focus though as she escaped the inning with only the single run given up.
The Tigers battled for their pitcher in the bottom of the third inning.
Paige Purifoy (Farmington, Ark.) hit a one-out single down the left field line to give the Tigers just their second base runner of the afternoon. Powell then singled up the middle to place Purifoy in scoring position. One batter later and Johnson came through with a clutch 2-out single to give the Tigers the lead.
Butler shutdown the Muleriders offense the rest of the game. The lone star state native only gave up two hits the rest of the game as she picked up the complete game victory.
Southern Arkansas loss in game two was their first loss since March 10
th of this season. Senior power hitter Brooke Goad will have to wait another day to try and inch her way closer to the NCAA Division II career homerun record.
Ouachita and Southern Arkansas will play the conclusion of the series on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
