Box Score 2 ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Southern Arkansas' offense attacked early and quickly against the Ouachita softball team in route to a 9-1 and 6-1 victory at Sully Anderson Field on Saturday afternoon.
Less than 24 hours after Ouachita (13-18, 9-15 GAC) pulled off an upset victory over No. 6 Southern Arkansas (32-4, 21-3 GAC), the Muleriders flexed their muscles on offense and outscored the Tigers a combined 15-2 in the double-header sweep.
Game One: Southern Arkansas 9, Ouachita 1
Faith Otts started the scoring for the Muleriders in the top of the first inning. The third basemen hit an RBI single to right field to score the games first run.
Southern Arkansas batted around in the top of the second inning. The Muleriders offense scored five runs off five hits during the inning.
Already up 6-0 in the top of the third inning, Southern Arkansas tacked on a pair of runs to extend their lead to eight.
Ouachita broke up the perfect game and no-hitter in the bottom of the third inning.
Paige Purifoy (Farmington, Ark.) reached on an error by the shortstop to begin the inning.
Two batters later and
Kelly Powell (Flower Mound, Texas) hit a two-out double to left field to score the Tigers only run of the game.
Maeson Grace hit a leadoff homerun in the top of the fourth inning to give the Muleriders a decisive 9-1 lead.
The score held up as Southern Arkansas run-ruled Ouachita in five innings. It was just the second time all season that Ouachita had been run-ruled in a game.
Game Two: Southern Arkansas 6, Ouachita 1
Southern Arkansas' offense did not let up in the second game of the afternoon. The Muleriders scored two runs in the second and third innings to take an early 2-0 lead.
Rachel Miller hit a two-run single to left field to extend the Southern Arkansas lead to 4-0 in the top of the fourth inning.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Purifoy started a two-out rally for the Tigers with a single up the middle. Tobi Finley (Sheridan, Ark.) doubled to centerfield to score Purifoy from first base. The RBI knock was the Tigers first run of the contest.
In the top of the sixth inning, designated player Brooke Goad hit her first homerun of the series and gave the Muleriders a 6-1 advantage. The two-run shot was Goad's 78
th career homerun and she is one away from tying the All-Time NCAA Division-II record.
The Tigers were unable to get anything going in the final two innings of play as Southern Arkansas picked up the day two sweep of the Tigers.
Ouachita will be back in action at Henderson State on Tuesday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
