Box Score 2 CONWAY, Ark. – A day after the Tigers pounded out 22 hits and a sweep of the Golden Suns, Sunday proved the opposite as a pitchers dual emerged in both games with Arkansas Tech sweeping the Tigers 4-1 and 6-3.
The seventh inning proved to be the most pivotal inning in both contests. Each game went into the final inning of play tied at 1-1, Arkansas Tech (15-5, 6-2) outscored Ouachita (9-6, 5-3) a combined 8-2 in the final frame of Sunday's games.
Game One: Arkansas Tech 4, Ouachita 1
Lexi Brooks (Mena, Ark.) got her first career start in the circle on Sunday morning and the freshman did not disappoint. Through the first four innings of the contest, Brooks was pitching a shutout and only allowed four hits in the contest.
Arkansas Tech got on the board first in the top of the fifth inning, when Ashton Sangster hit an RBI single to centerfield.
The Tigers tied the game up in the bottom of the sixth inning. Tobi Finley (Sheridan, Ark.) hit an RBI double down the left field line to score
Halley Ryburn (Monticello, Ark.) from first base.
The game appeared to be trending in Ouachita's direction even into the top of the seventh inning. The Tigers got the first two outs of the inning before running into trouble. A defensive error by Ouachita kept the inning alive for the Golden Suns.
Arkansas Tech capitalized on the new life given to them as they scored three unearned runs in the inning to take a decisive advantage in game one of the double header.
Ouachita loaded up the bases in the bottom of the seventh but their rally fell just short as the Golden Suns took the first game of the day.
Brooks was hit with the loss but pitched a great game. The freshman pitched a complete game, allowing just 1-earned run and striking out 5 in the process.
Game Two: Arkansas Tech 6, Ouachita 3
The second game of the twin bill was similar to that of the first game, in that they were both pitching battles for the majority of the contest.
Ouachita scored in the opening inning, thanks to a fielding error by the Golden Suns. Ouachita held on to the 1-0 advantage until the top of the fourth inning. Gaby Vasquez hit an RBI double to right center field to bring in the game tying run.
The game remained tied at 1 until the seventh inning. Arkansas Tech's offense then decided to shake off the rust of three games and exploded with a 5-run inning.
Down 6-1 in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Tigers began a rally of their own. Ouachita scored a pair of runs in the final inning but the rally fell short.
Ouachita will hit the road next weekend as they travel up to Searcy, Ark. to take on Harding University. The first game is slated for a 1 p.m. start time on Friday afternoon.
