Perfection for Butler

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Marissa Butler (Plano, Texas) followed up her no-hit performance on Saturday afternoon with a perfect game on Sunday as Ouachita swept Northwestern Oklahoma State 5-0 and 1-0.

"I can't take any credit, my team played great behind me." Butler said, "Honestly, I'm still in disbelief. Going through that inning, I was thinking to myself that this is actually happening."

Butler's perfect game was the first in Ouachita (19-22, 15-19 GAC) school history. The accomplishment also comes after Butler threw her first career no-hitter on Saturday afternoon against Northwestern Oklahoma State (11-29, 10-24 GAC). Butler had an impressive stat line between the two games. The junior hurler threw 14 innings, 1 walk and recorded 10 strikeouts.

For the first time this decade, Ouachita achieved the first four-game shutout sweep of an opponent. It was also the first four-game sweep of a conference opponent since March 29, 2013.
The Ouachita pitching staff combined to give up just 9 hits on the weekend. The staff also struck out 13 Ranger batters in the process.

Game One: Ouachita 5, NWOSU 0
Kelly Powell (Flower Mound, Texas) reached base by way of error to begin the game for Ouachita. A few batters later Gabby Gonzalez (Alice, Texas) laid down a perfect bunt to score Powell from third base to put the Tigers on the board.

Paige Purifoy (Farmington, Ark.) added to the Tigers score in the bottom of the fourth inning. The senior outfielder crushed an RBI single to left field to score Tobi Finley (Sheridan, Ark.) from second base.

Already, up 2-0 Ouachita looked to tack on insurance runs going into the bottom of the sixth inning. With the bases loaded and two outs in the inning, the Tigers appeared in danger of stranding the runners. Powell made sure that the runners would not be left stranded as she smashed a bases clearing double to the center field wall.

With a 5-0 cushion, Butler went back into the circle in the top of the seventh and made quick work of the Rangers offense. Butler completed the perfect game and the Tigers picked up the game one victory.

Powell was the offensive player of the game as she finished the contested going 2-for-4 with a trio of RBI's in the game.

Game Two: Ouachita 1, NWOSU 0
There was not much offense on either side in the second game of the twin bill on Sunday afternoon.

Powell doubled to right field to lead off the bottom of the first inning. Two batters later and Sarah Johnson (Mount Vernon, Texas) singled to right field to score Powell. It was the only run that the Tigers needed in the game.

Ouachita pitchers Lexi Brooks (Mena, Ark.) and Kelsey O'Brien (Denton, Texas) pitched a combined shutout to help Ouachita pick up the series sweep. The duo only allowed 3 total hits in the contest as they dismantled the Rangers offense.

Ouachita will have a short turn around as they face rival Henderson State on Tuesday evening at 4 p.m.
