Box Score ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The Ouachita Tiger baseball team defeated Southwestern Oklahoma State 5-4 on Friday afternoon.
Ouachita (12-32, 7-20 GAC) starting pitcher J. F. Matros (Arkadelphia, Ark.) threw a complete game and struck out a season high nine Southwestern Oklahoma State (21-19, 15-11 GAC) batters. Matros also broke two Great American Conference career records on Friday afternoon. The Arkadelphia native broke the record for career starts with 49 and the record for career innings pitched with 309.2.
"I was just trying to give my team a chance to win today." Matros said, "Breaking the records today was great. It's a great honor and there are so many people that I have to thank for helping me accomplish this feat."
Matros got off to a rough start though in the top of the first inning. Southwestern Oklahoma State scored on a wild pitch to break the game open.
The Tigers offense went full throttle in the bottom of the first inning.
Kyle Alexander (Conway, Ark.) hit a two-RBI double off the top of the wall in right center field. A few batters later
Preston Speers (McKinney, Texas) blasted a two-run homerun to left field, giving the Tigers a 4-1 lead going into the top of the second inning.
In the top of the third inning, Alex Pimentel hit a two-out double down the right field line to set the Bulldogs up with a runner in scoring position. Rogelio Sanchez singled to shortstop to bring in the Bulldogs second run of the game.
Going into top of the eighth, Ouachita held a 4-2 advantage over Southwestern. Marion McLean hit a 1-2 pitch back up the middle for a leadoff single. McLean advanced to second on a throw back into the infield. One batter later and McLean scored from second off a Bryan Miranda RBI double. The Tigers then ran into a bit of bad luck as an error in the next at bat helped the Bulldogs score the game-tying run.
The Ouachita offense came alive in the bottom of the eighth inning. Alexander led off the bottom of the inning with a double to left field.
Austin White (Arkadelphia, Ark.) bunted down the third base line and reached second on the throwing error by Daniel Richardson. The error also allowed Alexander to score the go-ahead run.
???????Matros made short work of the Bulldogs in the final half inning as he threw his third complete game of the season.
Offensively a trio of seniors paced Ouachita; Alexander finished the game a perfect 4-for-4 with a pair of RBI's. Speers went 2-for-4, with a homerun and 2-RBI's and White completed the game going 1-for-4 at the plate with the go-ahead RBI.
Bulldogs starting pitcher Cooper Cantwell threw his fourth complete game of the season in the losing effort. McLean was the only Southwestern player to record a multi-hit game.
Ouachita will celebrate Senior Day tomorrow afternoon against Southwestern Oklahoma State. Senior Day festivities will begin at 11:40 a.m. with first pitch scheduled for noon.
