Box Score 2 WEATHERFORD, Okla. – The Ouachita Baptist softball team swept Southwestern Oklahoma State 9-1 and 6-2 on Monday afternoon.
With the sweep Ouachita (21-27, 17-23 GAC) has almost clinched a spot in the Great American Conference Tournament. Ouachita is currently seventh in the standings and sits ahead of East Central and Oklahoma Baptist. Ouachita and East Central split their four game series earlier this season, while Oklahoma Baptist comes to Arkadelphia this coming weekend.
Southwestern Oklahoma State (12-35, 12-25 GAC) is now officially eliminated from GAC Tournament field.
Game One: OUA 9, SWOSU 1
Ouachita started a two out rally in the top of the first inning to score the runs of the contest on Monday morning.
Sarah Johnson (Mount Vernon, Texas) singled to third base to keep the inning alive.
Tobi Finley (Sheridan, Ark.) then drew a bases loaded walk, putting a pair of runners on the base paths for the Tigers offense. Sloane Precure (Canyon, Texas) reached base on a dropped fly ball from the center fielder. The error allowed Johnson to score from second base. A few batters later and Finley scored on a throwing error by the Bulldogs second baseman.
The score remained 2-0 in Ouachita's favor until the top of the third inning. Natalie Jackson (Mansfield, Texas) doubled to left center to lead off the inning for the Tigers. Moments later Finley executed a perfect squeeze bunt to bring Jackson home from third.
Southwestern Oklahoma's offense responded in the bottom of the third inning. Rileigh Ricken walked to start off the inning and then advanced to second on a bunt single from Bella Garcia. Amanda Moreno hit a one out single to left center a few batters later to put the Bulldogs on the board.
Ouachita's offense broke the game open in the top of the fourth. The Tigers loaded the bases with no outs in the inning,
Kelsey O'Brien (Denton, Texas) smashed a 1-0 pitch to left center field to bring in a pair of runs for the Tigers. Two batters later and
Kelly Powell (Flower Mound, Texas) shot the ball back up the middle for a two-RBI single.
The Tigers offense was back at it in the top of the seventh inning. Precure tripled to right center field with one out in the inning to put a runner in scoring position for Ouachita. The Lone Star State native then scored on a wild pitch to put the score at 8-1. The Bulldogs committed their sixth error of the afternoon, allowing Samantha Ortiz to reach base in the process. One batter later and
Madison Crosby (Sheridan, Ark.) hit an RBI single to right center field.
Marissa Butler (Plano, Texas) pitched her second complete game of the weekend. The junior gave up just 1 run, off 3 hits and struck out 5 in the process.
Six Tigers collected a hit in the victory, but it was Powell and O'Brien who each ended the game with a pair of RBI's in the contest.
Game Two: OUA 6, SWOSU 2
Powell lead off the second game of the double header with a walk, Jackson then bunted Powell to second base giving the Tigers a runner in scoring position in the first frame of the contest. Johnson stepped to the plate and crushed a 1-1 pitch through the right side of the infield to score the Tigers first run of the contest.
Southwestern responded in the bottom of the first inning with a two-out rally. Kinsey Skroh doubled to left center field and then stole third on the next pitch. Sidney Kirk hit an infield single to tie the game up at one.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the third inning, Moreno hit a one out solo homerun to give the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead.
The Bulldogs lead did not last long though as O'Brien singled to center field on an 0-2 count to tie the game at two. Ouachita's offense kept the pressure on the Bulldogs as Johnson and Finley each had RBI hits in the frame to put the Tigers up 4-2.
Ouachita tacked onto their lead in the top of the sixth inning with RBI knocks from Powell and
Gabby Gonzalez (Alice, Texas).
Sarah Chamberlain (Shreveport, La.) picked up the win after pitching a shutout record in relief. Butler made her second appearance of the day and threw three no-hit innings to secure the victory for the Tigers.
Powell, Johnson, Finley and Gonzalez all had multi-hit performances in the game two victory over Southwestern Oklahoma State.
Ouachita will be back at home this weekend to take on Oklahoma Baptist in the regular season finale.
