Box Score CLEVLAND, Miss. – The Ouachita baseball teams late inning rallies came up short on Tuesday night as No. 3 Delta State slugged their way to a 20-13 victory.
Ouachita (13-34) and Delta State (36-7) combined to score 33 runs in the contest. The school record for combined runs in a game is 35 and was set against East Central on February 17, 2013. In the first meeting of the season between Ouachita and Delta State, the Statesmen came away with a 3-2 victory at Rab Rodgers Field.
Ouachita started out the bottom of the first inning in routine fashion and looked as if they would get out of the inning without a run crossing the plate. Zack Shannon then scored on a dropped fly ball by Ouachita's left fielder.
Trailing 1-0 going into the top of the fourth inning the Tigers offense responded. Tee Collier (Bryant, Ark.) hit a two-run double down the right field line to put Ouachita ahead. A few batters later and
Jakahari Howell (Arkadelphia, Ark.) hit a two-run triple to left center field extending the Tigers lead to 4-1.
Delta State responded though in a big way with a six-run inning. The Statesmen brought 11 batters to the plate; Ouachita had to use two pitchers to get out of the inning.
The Tigers offense came out swinging in the top of the third inning. Cade McBride (Prosper, Texas) and Aaron Studdard (Denton, Texas) each had multi-RBI hits in the inning and the Ouachita reclaimed the lead at 8-6.
The Statesmen offense pounded out seven runs on four hits in the bottom of the third inning. The offensive outburst allowed Delta State to take a 14-8 advantage going into the fourth inning of play. Delta State extended their lead in the bottom of the fourth inning with a four-run scoring frame.
After a 2-run bottom of the sixth inning, Ouachita trailed 20-8 and was in need of runs.
Ty Owens (El Dorado, Ark.) and
Chandler Blake (Frisco, Texas) each picked up RBI hits to bring the Tigers within 10 runs of Delta State. Tyler Riebock (Rockwall, Texas) had the big hit of the inning though with a three-run bomb to right field.
The Tigers were held scoreless the final two innings of play as Delta State picked up the victory.
Riebock lead the Tiger offense with a 2-for-6 night at the plate with a three-run homerun.
Preston Speers (McKinney, Texas), McBride and Owens all had multi-hit nights as well for the Tigers.
Ouachita used six pitchers in the loss on Tuesday night with Noah Fowler (Little Rock, Ark.) picking up his third loss of the season.
Ouachita will take on Henderson State this weekend to finish Great American Conference play.
