Box Score 2 ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The Ouachita softball team came away victorious on Saturday afternoon with a pair of 6-2 wins over Oklahoma Baptist.
Ouachita (25-27, 21-23 GAC) is starting to peak at the right time of the year as the Tigers have now won six in a row against Great American Conference competition. The winning streak is the longest since the 2011 season; Ouachita won seven straight games from March 19 – April 2 of that season.
For just the fourth time in program history, the Tigers finish the season with 25 or more wins. Ouachita last accomplished this feat during the 2010 campaign, that team set the program record for wins in a season with 36.
Ouachita locked up the seven seed in the upcoming Great American Conference Tournament and they will face Arkansas Tech on Wednesday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. Ouachita and Arkansas Tech split the regular season series at a neutral site location back in early March.
Game One: Ouachita 6, Oklahoma Baptist 2
The Ouachita offense opened up the game on fire.
Paige Purifoy (Farmington, Ark.) singled down the left field line with one out in the inning. The Tigers then went station to station when
Sarah Johnson (Mount Vernon, Texas) singled to left field.
Gabby Gonzalez (Alice, Texas) laid down a perfect bunt to load up the bases for Ouachita.
Madison Crosby (Sheridan, Ark.) then roped an RBI single into left field to score the first run of the contest. After a strike out Tobi Finley (Sheridan, Ark.) drew a two-out walk to bring in the Tigers second run of the inning. Sloane Precure (Canyon, Texas) ended the scoring for Ouachita with an RBI single up the middle.
Oklahoma Baptist (16-31) cut into the Tigers 3-0 lead with a solo homerun by Bry Flanagan. The homerun was a bit of controversy though as neither of the teams were sure the ball had hit a tree beyond the left field fence. After much deliberation, the umpires confirmed that it was indeed a homerun for the Bison.
The Ouachita offense struck again in the bottom of the second inning.
Kelly Powell (Flower Mound, Texas) walked to lead off the inning; Powell then stole second to put a runner in scoring position for the Tigers. Johnson hit a sacrifice fly to center field to extend the Tigers lead to 4-1.
The Bison tacked on another run in the top of the fourth inning. The RBI single by Aspen Grimes put Oklahoma Baptist within a pair of runs to Ouachita.
Johnson's big bat came through again in the bottom of the fourth inning. Powell laced a one out single to center field to put a runner on for Ouachita. After a Bison strikeout, Johnson stepped to the plate with two outs in the inning. Johnson then smashed a no doubt homerun to left center field.
Ouachita shutout Oklahoma Baptist the final three frames of the contest taking away a 6-2 win.
Marissa Butler (Plano, Texas) threw a complete game for the second time this weekend as she picked up her 12
th win of the season.
The five Ouachita seniors accounted for nine of the teams 10 total hits in the contest. Powell finished the game 1-for-3 with a pair of runs, Purifoy went 2-for-4 with a run, and Gonzalez completed the game going 1-for-3 and a run. Crosby finished the contest a perfect 3-for-3 with an RBI and Johnson went 2-for-3 with a homerun, two-runs scored and a trio of RBI's.
Game Two: Ouachita 6, Oklahoma Baptist 2
Oklahoma Baptist cracked the scoreboard first in game two of the afternoon. Flanagan smoked an RBI single up the middle in the top of the first inning giving the Bison a 1-0 advantage.
Ouachita blasted their way to a 5-1 lead in the bottom of the second inning. The Tigers scored five runs off five hits, thanks to RBI's by Precure, Johnson and Samantha Ortiz (North Richland Hills, Texas).
In the top of the third inning, Oklahoma Baptist resorted to the long ball again to cut into the Tigers lead. This time it was Shelby Savage with a homerun over the right field wall.
Ouachita tacked on a crucial insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Natalie Jackson (Mansfield, Texas) Singled up the middle to begin the inning. Two batters later Powell singled up the middle to score Jackson, Powell ended up on third after the Bison's centerfielder over ran the ball in the outfield. Purifoy flew out to center field to end the inning though.
The Tigers shutdown Oklahoma Baptist to complete the four game sweep of Oklahoma Baptist. It was the second time this season that Ouachita swept a four game series against a conference opponent.
Lexi Brooks (Mena, Ark.) picked up the win in game two. Powell, Purifoy and Johnson each had RBI hits in the game to lead the Tigers offense.
Ouachita will take on Arkansas Tech in the Great American Conference Tournament on Wednesday afternoon at 1 p.m.
