Box Score 2 MONTICELLO, Ark. – The Ouachita softball team split games one and two with Arkansas-Monticello 1-2 and 5-0 on Sunday afternoon.
Ouachita (14-21, 10-18 GAC) has split the opening day of a weekend series against Great American Conference teams for three consecutive weekends now.
Sarah Johnson (Mount Vernon, Texas) went 5-for-6 on the day with an RBI, to lead the Ouachita offense.
Arkansas-Monticello (5-32, 5-21 GAC) broke a 13-game losing streak against the Tigers on Sunday afternoon.
Game One: Ouachita 1, UAM 2
Jordan Herbner leadoff the bottom of the first with a single through the middle of the infield. Two batters later and Jewels Caro hit a one out single to center, giving the Cotton Blossoms a 1-0 lead. A few batters later and Kaylee Freeman connected on a 2-2 pitch and Arkansas-Monticello took a 2-0 lead into the second inning.
The game remained a 2-0 affair until the top of the fourth inning. Sloane Precure (Canyon, Texas) hit a bunt single to lead off the inning. Johnson doubled to right center in the next at bat to give the Tigers their first run of the contest.
Neither team scored the rest of the game as Arkansas-Monticello picked up their fifth win of the season.
Johnson paced the Tigers offense in game one, going 2-for-3 with an RBI in the game.
Marissa Butler picked up the loss in a complete game effort.
Game Two: Ouachita 5, UAM 0
A pitchers dual ensued in the first four innings of the contest as neither team scored a run.
The tide started to turn in the top of the fifth inning for the Tigers offense. Precure reached base on a one out single up the middle. Johnson then doubled down the right field line to put two Tigers in scoring position. Freshman outfielder Tobi Finley (Sheridan, Ark.) made the most of it as she hit a two-RBI double to right centerfield to give Ouachita a 2-0 lead.
Ouachita added a third run in the top of the sixth inning off a wild pitch. In the top of the seventh Finley scored a run an error to extend the Tigers lead to four runs.
Paige Purifoy (Farmington, Ark.) capped off the scoring for Ouachita with an RBI fielder's choice.
Kelsey O'Brien (Denton, Texas) pitched a complete game shutout to pick up her second win of the season. Finley was the top hitter for the Tigers in game two as she went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI's.
Ouachita and Arkansas-Monticello will play a second double-header tomorrow afternoon starting at 1 p.m.
