Another Day, Another Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MONTICELLO, Ark. – The Ouachita softball split a pair of games with Arkansas Monticello on Monday afternoon 7-1 and 1-3.

It is the seventh time this season that Ouachita (15-22, 11-19 GAC) has split a pair of games with a Great American Conference Opponent. For Arkansas Monticello (6-33, 6-22 GAC) it was their first conference split since March 17th against Northwestern Oklahoma State.

Game One: Ouachita 7, UAM 1
It did not take long for the Tigers offense to get rolling on Monday afternoon. Kelly Powell (Flower Mound, Texas) leadoff the game with a single to right field and two batters later Sarah Johnson (Mount Vernon, Texas) crushed a home run to left field. The home run was Johnson's ninth homerun of the season.

Starting pitcher Lexi Brooks (Mena, Ark.) appeared shaky at first in the circle as she walked in a run, but the freshman soon settled down and got into the groove of the game. Brooks exited the game allowing just three hits in four innings of work. The win also gave Brooks her first collegiate victory at Ouachita.

The score remained 2-1 throughout the game as the two teams stayed evenly matched for much of the contest. Then in the top of the seventh, the Tigers offense erupted for five runs in the half inning.

Madison Crosby (Sheridan, Ark.) and Sloane Precure (Canyon, Texas) each had a two-run double to left field, while freshman right fielder Tobi Finley (Sheridan, Ark.) added an RBI of her own late in the inning.

Marissa Butler (Plano, Texas) made short work of the Blossoms in the bottom half of the seventh, as Monticello was retired in order to end the game.

Game Two: Ouachita 1, UAM 3
The second game of the afternoon was the complete opposite of the first game. The two teams ended up in a pitcher's duel for the majority of the game, with runs coming at a premium.

Ouachita scratched the board first in the top of the third inning. Powell hit a one out single to left field to put a runner on for the Tigers. Precure then doubled to left center to move Powell over to third base. Johnson then came up to the plate and hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score the opening run of the contest.

With two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning, the Tigers appeared to be rolling through another scoreless inning. Sarah Chamberlain's (Shreveport, La.) then went over the head of her catcher and Monticello tied the game at one. Moments later and the Blossoms took the lead after an error by the Tigers third baseman.

Already ahead 2-1, Kali Bolter hit an RBI single to right center to give the Blossoms a 3-1 cushion heading into the final two frames of action.

The Tigers rally in the bottom of the seventh came up short as the tying run never reached the base paths for Ouachita.

Ouachita will be back at home this weekend against Northwestern Oklahoma State. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Friday afternoon.
