ARKADELPHIA – The Ouachita Baptist University softball team opened its weekend tournament at Sully Anderson Field on Saturday with a 2-1 win over Midwestern State followed by an 11-1 loss to No. 20 Texas A&M-Kingsville.
In the win over the Mustangs (1-5), Ouachita (3-9) book-ended its runs with an RBI single in the bottom of the first inning by
Jillian Jones and a game-winning RBI single by
Heather Brown in the bottom of the seventh. MSU had tied the game previously with one run in the top of the second on a solo homerun.
Ouachita's game-winning action in the seventh came with two outs.
Hope Waid reached on a fielding error, stole second, and then scored when Brown's hit found empty space in between the MSU second baseman, centerfielder, and right fielder.
Madison Miller (2-2) earned the complete-game victory, giving up one run off three hits with seven strikeouts and four walks.
In the second game, the 20th-ranked Javelinas (10-1) picked up their 10th win of the young season by scattering 16 hits and scoring double-digit runs for the third time this season.
The Tigers avoided the shut out with a solo homerun by
Jillian Jones in the bottom of the seventh inning. It was her first round-tripper of the season and 12th of her Ouachita career.
Ouachita is back in action on Sunday at home against Christian Brothers. First pitch is set for 12:30 p.m.
