RUSSELLVILLE, Arkansas – The Ouachita Baptist University baseball team came up on the short end of a pitching duel on Friday night in a 3-1 loss to Arkansas Tech on the road to open a three-game series.
Only two pitchers were used in the game, with Tech's Patrick Miner (6-1) coming away with a complete-game victory, giving up just four Ouachita hits and recording 10 strikeouts with only one walk. Miner faced just four more batters than the minimum.
Ouachita's Cooper Timmons (4-3) also went the distance with a quality outing, giving up two earned runs on eight hits with three strikeouts and just one walk.
Tech (17-11, 10-9 GAC) started the scoring with a solo homerun in the second. Ouachita (18-12, 12-7 GAC) answered in the fifth with its lone run coming on an RBI single from CW Schrader. The Wonder Boys broke the tie with two runs in the eighth, including the go-ahead scoring on a squeeze bunt with two outs. Tech took advantage of a Ouachita error to score its third and final run of the game.
Ouachita's four hits were scattered out among Schrader, Tallon Heine, Jud Arrington, and Wyatt Core, all singles. The Tigers were held out of scoring position in eight of the nine innings.
Games two and three of the series are set for Saturday starting at 1 p.m. in Russellville.
