TIGERS GET HOT, SWEEP EAGLES

ARKADELPHIA – The Ouachita Baptist University softball team picked up two wins this afternoon, sweeping the Williams Baptist Eagles 7-4 in game one and 8-4 in game two.

Today's games were played at Dee White Field on Henderson State's campus due to wet field conditions at Ouachita's Sully Anderson Field.

Game One:
  • Tuesday Melton earned her second win and second complete game of the season, going a full seven innings in the circle. Melton struck out four and allowed just five hits and three earned runs.
  • Callie Jourdan went 3-for-3 at the plate with three singles and a run scored.
  • Madyson Shoebottom hit her first collegiate home run, a three run bomb, in route to a 2-for-4 day at the plate with three RBI.
  • Hope Waid went 2-for-3 with a run scored and two stolen bases.
  • Erin Williams also recorded two RBI in the game.

The first game of the day started out close, with the game tied at zeros until the bottom of the third inning. In the bottom of the third is when the Tigers came alive. The first run of the day came from a sacrifice fly from Erin Williams that scored Jourdan. A couple of baserunners later Madyson Shoebottom unloaded on a ball, driving it deep and out of left center field to score Tiffany Backeberg and Jessalyn Ahrens to give the Tigers a 4-0 lead. Williams Baptist plated a run in the fourth, but Ouachita added three more runs in the fifth inning on RBI singles from Williams, Lauren Lester and Callie Jourdan to put Ouachita ahead 7-1. The Eagles added a few more runs in the sixth, but it was not enough as the Tigers set down WBU in order in the top of the seventh to cruise to a 7-4 victory to improve to 2-2 on the year.

Game Two:
  •  Callie Jourdan stayed hot, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored in the second game of the day.
  • Erin Williams hit a solo home run, her first of the season.
  • Lacy Ornelas got back on track, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
  • Katelyn Provence went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.
  • Maggi Huddleston earned her first win of the season. Huddleston pitched the full seven innings, allowing just one earned run and striking out four. She also went 1-for-3 with two RBI at the plate.

Ouachita struck first again in game two of today's double header, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a Shoebottom fielder's choice that scored Provence. The Eagles came back with a big second inning, taking their first lead of the day and going up 3-1 after the second inning. The Tigers came back and came back in a fury, rattling off seven unanswered runs between the third and sixth innings. The hot stretch for the Tigers started with a solo homer from Erin Williams, her first of the season. Huddleston doubled to left, scoring Lauren Lester and Shoebottom to give the Tigers a 4-3 lead. The fourth inning saw Jourdan score on an error on a ball hit by Waid. Ouachita Tacked on three more runs in the sixth on RBI singles from Waid and Provence and a hard hit ground out from Kennedy Wilkie. This put the Tigers up 8-3 over the Eagles. WBU plated one run in the top pf the seventh, but it was not enough and the Tigers picked up the sweep, winning game two 8-4.

The Tigers will look to continue their success tomorrow afternoon as they take on the Golden Lions of Arkansas-Pine Bluff in a double header at Dee White Field.
