ARKADELPHIA – The Ouachita Baptist University baseball team split the first two games of its Great American Conference series at home against Arkansas Tech University on Saturday, losing game one by a score of 7-6 and coming back to win game two by a score of 11-3.
The first game featured early offense with both teams scoring two runs in the first inning. Ouachita (11-7, 6-5 GAC) added two more in the second to take its first lead of the game
Tech (16-6, 9-2 GAC) then scored five straight runs over the next five innings to hold a 7-4 lead at the seventh-inning stretch. Ouachita answered with two in the bottom of the seventh, but was held scoreless the rest of the way to allow the Wonder Boys to hold on for the series-opening win.
Wyatt Core led the Tigers in game one with a 3-for-5 performance at the plate with three runs scored.
G. Allen went 2-for-5.
Isaac Nowell was responsible for half of Ouachita's scoring with three runs driven in.
With rainy conditions in the second game the Tigers put up crooked numbers in the first two innings to hold an early 5-2 lead. Ouachita added four more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning with a pair of hits and taking advantage of two Tech errors.
Ouachita finalized the scoring with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on a homerun to left field by
Dustin Bermudez which was his second of the season.
For the eighth time this season Ouachita put up double digits in the hit category with 11. Bermudez finished 3-for-3 with five RBI.
Wyatt Core went 2-for-4. Six other tigers had one hit in the victory.
Reigning GAC pitcher of the week
Teddy Webb (3-1) had another quality outing, giving up just one earned run in the first 5.2 innings with five strikeouts.
Cameron Marchant and
Jonathan Weiss combined to keep the Wonder Boys off the scoreboard in the final inning and a third.
The rubber match of the series is set for Sunday at 1 p.m. at Rab Rodgers Field.
