ARKADELPHIA, Ark.- The Ouachita Tigers () opened up the baseball season on Friday afternoon, facing off with the No. 16 Rams of Angelo State University (). The Tigers dropped the first game by a score of 3-0, as they were just unable to get anything going on offense. In the second game, the Tigers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first before falling behind late in the game and dropping a 6-2 contest.
All three of Angelo State's runs in the first game came in the fourth inning. Only two of the runs were earned in the inning, as an error by Ouachita catcher
Chris Tavares allowed one of the runners to advance across home plate.
Davis Ward took the loss in the first game, but posted a solid eight inning performance in which he recorded seven strikeouts.
Matt Balogh finished the game hitting 1-of-2, also taking a trip to first base via a walk. Although
Keegan Ghidotti failed to get a hit in the game, he was walked twice in the game by the Rams.
The second game of the afternoon saw the Tigers jumping out to a quick 1-0 lead behind an RBI from Ghidotti.
Matt Balogh, who was on base due to a lead-off single, scored on the play.
The Rams responded to the Tiger run with a run in the second and another in the third. Ouachita however, rebounded with a run of their own in the third, tying the game back up at 2.
Angelo State's three-run rally in the fourth inning would prove to be a game changer, as they took a three run lead in a four-hit inning. If not for a throw-down at home from left field by Ouachita's Balogh, the Rams' rally might have continued.
Angelo continued to extend their lead in the sixth inning, picking up a run on a fielders' choice play in which the Tigers committed a throwing error, allowing Tyler Coughenour to cross home plate.
Michael Lange took the victory for Angelo State in the second game, while Ouachita's
Austin Watson was credited with the loss, giving up four runs, three of which were earned.
Ouachita hits the diamond again on Saturday, where they face off against the Rams in another double-header. First pitch is scheduled at noon.
