MAGNOLIA, Ark.- We've all heard of baseball teams putting on their rally caps late in games, but the Ouachita Tigers (3-4-1) brought a whole new meaning to the phrase on Wednesday evening. The Tigers posted 13 runs in a matter of two innings, fueling themselves to a 16-13 victory in a non-conference contest against No. 15 Southern Arkansas (5-3).
The first inning was an introduction to what would be a storybook finish, as the Tigers put up two runs, followed by a three run half inning for the Muleriders. The fourth inning is when things began to look dim for the Tigers though, as the Muleriders notched a five spot on the scoreboard.
Over the course of the fifth and sixth innings, the Muleriders stretched their lead, picking up four more runs and making the score 12-2 going into the top of the seventh.
The tides turned quickly in the seventh though, as a four run inning found the Tigers with new life. Ouachita was able to hold SAU scoreless in the bottom of the seventh, and came back in the top of the eighth carrying the momentum built in the previous frame and putting up nine runs on just three outs.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Tigers were again able to hold the Muleriders scoreless, before both teams posted a run in the ninth, resulting in a 16-13 final.
Keegan Ghiddoti accounted for over a fourth of the Tiger runs, recording four RBIs as well as a run scored in the game.
Tyler Faught recorded 3 RBIs in the game, en route to a 2-of-2 performance from the plate.
Southern Arkansas had six players finish with two RBIs in the game, with David Harris highlighting their performances in a 2-of-4 game in which he recorded a home run and two runs scored.
The Tigers used seven pitchers in the game, but
Drew Feuerbacher took the win after one inning of work in which he held the Muleriders scoreless. SAU also used seven pitchers, with Sheldon O'Dell taking the loss after giving up four earned runs while not recording a single out in the top of the eighth.
With the win, the Tigers have won three of their last four games, while the only game that wasn't a win was a tie against Tarleton State on Saturday.
The Tigers return to action on Saturday, when they kick off conference play in Ada, Oklahoma against East Central University. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
