Tigers Upset #3 Arkansas Tech In Opening Game Of The GAC Baseball Championship

Box Score ENID, Okla. - The Ouachita Tigers scored three runs in the top of the ninth, including two on 376 ft. home run by Matt Sinclair, to defeat top-seeded #3 Arkansas Tech in the opening game of the Great American Conference Baseball Championships. The Tigers victory ended the Wonderboys 22-game winning streak and earned Davis Ward his tenth win on the year.

The Tigers jumped out to 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Parker Norris scored from second on a throwing error by the Tech first baseman after fielding a bunt by Chris Tavares. Will Wallace would reach first on a fielder's choice, driving in Keegan Ghidotti from third. The Tigers would not score again until the sixth inning, but not because of a lack of scoring opportunities. Tech would throw out three Tiger basereunners at home plate by the end of the third inning. Ouachita would strand 11 baserunners in the game.

The Tigers took a 3-1 lead in the sixth, when Wallace was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, scoring Norris from third. The Tigers would be retired in ortder in the top of the seventh. 

Arkansas Tech (41-9) would rally in the bottom of the seventh after Ward issued a lead-off walk, his only base on balls of the game. Jay Johnson would score on a grounder to first to make it 3-2. Tech's next run would come unearned via a throwing error.

Still tied 3-3 heading into the ninth, the Tigers rallied with three runs to put the game away. Back-to-back singles by Tavares and Wallace would get the inning started. Tavares would be thrown out at third trying to advance on a passed ball, however, Wallace was able to advance to second. Jace Melby would a single to left center to score Wallace and put the Tigers up one. Matt Sinclair would follow Melby with his bomb over the left field wall to put the game away and give the Tigers a 6-3 lead.

Ward, who faced one batter in the ninth, got his tenth win of the year, best in the conference. He allowed two earned runs and struck out four batters. The win moved into first place on the Tigers career-wins list. Ward is 5-1 against ranked teams this season. Ghidotti came in to close out the ninth and earned his eighth save of the season, tying him for second on the team's single-season save list.

Landon Moore, Tavares and Melby all recorded two hits for the Tigers.
