Box Score 2 MONTICELLO, Ark. – Behind four RBI and a homer by both
Reuben Miller and
Parker Norris, the Ouachita Tigers split a doubleheader with the University of Arkansas at Monticello Boll Weevils on Monday. The Tigers won the first game 10-7 in 10 innings but lost the second game 3-2.
The Boll Weevils (10-8, 7-6 GAC) scored first in game one on a double to center field.
Connor Eller then picked up a strikeout and forced a groundout with the bases loaded to escape the inning after surrendering the lone run.
The Tigers answered in the top of the second inning, when
Ryan Hammer singled up the middle to score
Will Wallace. Wallace led off the inning with a single before scoring from second. Ouachita then took a 2-1 lead an inning later when
Parker Norris scored from third as Wallace was caught stealing second. UAM tied the game again, however, in the bottom of the inning on a single with runners on the corners.
Both teams were held scoreless in the fourth and fifth innings, with Eller striking out three more batters. In the top of the sixth, Miller scored on an error after singling up the middle earlier in the inning. Then, with the bases loaded, Norris walked which allowed
Drew Feuerbacher to score from third.
Down 4-2, UAM led off the bottom of the sixth with a single after Eller recorded another strikeout. A two-run home run by the Weevils tied the game at 4-4, and then
Connor Reed replaced Eller and ended the inning with two strikeouts.
A half-inning after UAM's homer, Miller followed with a home run of his own over the right field wall to give Ouachita a 6-4 lead. Despite a run scored by the Weevils in the bottom of the seventh, the Tigers still held a 6-5 lead with two innings to play.
The Tigers were held scoreless in the eighth, and UAM tied the game in the bottom half on a single to right center. Both teams were then unable to score in the ninth, sending to game to extra innings.
Ouachita's offense came alive in the 10 inning, as the Tigers scored four runs on three hits. The rally started when Hammer doubled to start the inning, and he later scored on a sacrifice fly by Norris. Later in the inning,
Jace Melby picked up an RBI-single and Miller recorded an RBI-double down the right field line. The Tigers then scored their fourth run of the inning on a wild pitch.
With a 10-6 lead,
Josh Reeves forced a fly out and a strikeout to pick up two quick outs. Then a homerun by the Weevils brought the score to 10-7 before Reeves ended the game by forcing a groundout to Miller at third base. Reeves earned the victory for Ouachita, giving him his first win of the season. Eller went 5.1 innings and struck out six, and Reed pitched two innings while striking out two.
Miller and Norris led the offense with three hits each, while Norris had two runs batted in and Miller and three.
In the second game of the day, the Tigers scored three runs through the first three innings. The scoring started on the first batter of the game, when Norris homered to right field on the sixth pitch. Then in the second inning, Hammer doubled to right center which allowed
Matt Sinclair to score the second run. Miller picked up his fourth RBI of the day in the third inning on a double to left field, scoring
Justin Weigle from second.
John Franklin Matros (3-1), who started on the mound for the Tigers, struck out three batters through the first three innings and allowed only one hit. The Weevils scored in the fourth, however, on a single to left field.
With a 3-1 lead, the Tigers were held scoreless in the fourth and fifth innings. In the bottom of the fifth, UAM loaded the bases with no outs, but Matros escaped the jam after striking out two consecutive batters and forcing another to fly out to left field. After a single in the bottom of the sixth, though, UAM tied the game on a two-run homer.
Ouachita was then unable to score in the seventh, and with the bases loaded, the Weevils scored the game-winning run on a single down the left field line. Matros was handed his first loss of the season, despite striking out nine batters in 6.2 innings.
Miller finished the day with four hits, four runs batted in and two runs. Norris also recorded four hits, three RBI and two runs scored, and Hammer added two runs batted in.
The Tigers (11-9, 7-3 GAC) will play the Weevils again on Tuesday, in a midweek-nonconference matchup at Rab Rodgers Field in Arkadelphia. The first pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
