Tigers top St. Mary's 5-4

MIDLOTHIAN, Texas - After falling behind 2-1 in the doubles matches, the Ouachita Tigers men's tennis team took four of the six singles matches to defeat #35 St. Mary's University. The 17th-ranked Tigers are now 3-0 on the year.

The Tigers top two doubles team were defeated to open play. Lennart Lonneman and Luis Chab got the lone doubles win for Ouachita by a score of 8-5. Coming back from injury, this was Lonneman's first competition in 2016. The Tigers top duo of Oliveira and Carbo lost to the 16th-ranked doubles tandem of Saint Mary's by a score of 8-6.

Vitor Oliveira took the number one singles match in straight sets by a score of 7-5, 7-6. Oliveira currently ranks 28th in singles play. Jason Mechali also won in straight sets by a final of 6-3, 6-4. Lonneman and David Carbo earned the other two singles wins for the Tigers.

"This was a good test for us," head coach Craig Ward said. "St. Mary's made us fight. I thought we showed a lot of character after being down 2-1 after the doubles."

He added, "This match pointed out some things we need to do better, while still coming away with a quality win."

The Tigers will play their first home match on Feb. 18 versus Southwest Baptist University.
