Box Score SHAWNEE, Okla. – The Ouachita Baptist Tigers baseball team started out hot against Oklahoma Baptist on Sunday afternoon, but the Tigers ultimately fell 8-4.
It is the second straight season in which Oklahoma Baptist (8-2, 3-0 GAC) has swept Ouachita (3-9, 0-3 GAC) to start out Great American Conference play.
The Tigers offense came out swinging as the first four batters of the game hit singles to the outfield.
Kyle Alexander (Conway, Ark.) and
Preston Speers (McKinney, Texas) each picked up an RBI to give the Tigers an early 2-0 lead. Moments later
Ty Owens (El Dorado, Ark.) laid down the perfect bunt single to bring in the third Ouachita run of the inning.
It was just the second time all season in which the Tigers held a 3-0 advantage after an inning of play. Ouachita also scored three runs in the top of the first against Union University; the Tigers won that game 9-8.
The Tigers extended their lead to four runs after a Tyler Riebock (Rockwall, Texas) RBI single to center field in the top of the second inning.
The Bison responded with a two-out rally in the bottom of the third inning. Oklahoma Baptist scored 3 runs off 2 hits to make the game a one-run ball game.
Oklahoma Baptist tied the game up in the bottom of the fifth inning. Jake Gozzo singled through the left side of the infield to score Juan Gonzalez from second base.
The Tigers were cruising in the bottom half of the 8
th inning with the game tied at 4. Then with two-outs in the inning and the bases loaded a bit of bad luck fell on the Tigers. The right fielder committed an error that allowed three runs to score.
By the time the Tigers escaped the inning the damage was done as Oklahoma Baptist lead 8-4 going into the final half inning of play. Riebock ended the game with a fly out to left field.
For a third, straight game Riebock was the offensive star for the Tigers with another multi-hit day. The freshman also drew two walks in the game.
Sheldon McCown (Nacogdoches, Texas) picked up the loss after going 2.2 innings, giving up 4 runs off 5 hits. None of the runs were earned for McCown though.
The Tigers will look to bounce back at home next weekend against Southern Nazarene. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Friday afternoon at Rab Rodgers Field.
