Box Score ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – On a day that began with decent weather soon turned into a down pour both on and off the field as Henderson State defeated Ouachita 9-3 on Tuesday afternoon.
The game was scoreless in the first two frames as both teams tested out the other team's starting pitcher. Freshman Noah Fowler (Little Rock, Ark.) started his first career game for Ouachita (4-12, 1-4 GAC) on Monday afternoon. Fowler looked to be in a groove early, throwing only eight total pitches in the second inning.
Henderson State was able to get to the freshman pitcher early in the third inning of the contest. The first run of the inning was scored after
Kyle Alexander (Conway, Ark.) dropped the second out of the inning. A few batters later Dalton Guthrie singled in a run to give the Reddies a 2-0 advantage. Bryson Haskins tacked on some run support for the Reddies with a two-RBI double to left centerfield.
The Tigers began their counter offensive in the bottom of the fourth inning. Tyler Riebock (Rockwall, Texas) laid down a successful bunt single with one-out in the inning. Flash forward a few batters later and Ouachita was in prime position to get back in the game.
Preston Speers (McKinney, Texas) stepped up to the plate with the bases-loaded and only one out in the inning. The senior first baseman hit a sacrifice fly to deep left field to score the Tigers first run of the contest.
Henderson State appeared to be at a breaking point in the bottom of the fifth inning. Relief pitcher Foxx Smith came into pitch and got the first out of the inning. Smith, then walked four consecutive batters to give the Tigers their second run of the day. Smith lost his command and hit Alexander to bring the Tigers back within a run of the Reddies.
Henderson State's head coach had seen enough as Smith was pulled from the game in favor of starting centerfielder Jordan Harris. Harris then proceeded to strikeout
Austin White (Arkadelphia, Ark.) and Speers flew out for the second time in the game to end the inning.
As the rain began to pour and the sounds of thunder rumbling in the background, the game played on into the top of the seventh inning. Both coaches agreed with the home plate umpire that the seventh inning would be the final inning of the day.
Henderson State led 4-3 going into the top of the seventh inning. Tigers pitcher Michael Shepherd (Cabot, Ark.) appeared to lose his command as he hit the first batter of the inning. Two batters later and the bases were loaded after a walk.
Carter Wade (Little Rock, Ark.) came in from the bullpen as he tried to shut the door on a potent Reddies offense. With one swing of the bat
Caleb Carr knocked in three-runs on a single to right centerfield. The hit gave the Reddies a 7-3 advantage over the Tigers.
Wade settled down and struck out two of the next three batters, but gave up another two-run single to Brandon Pollock to give the Reddies a 9-3 lead.
The Tigers rally came up short in the seventh inning as White struck out swinging to end the game.
Ouachita will be on the road this Friday against Arkansas Tech. Game one of the three game series is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
