Boll Weevils Shock Tigers in Extras

Box Score ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The Ouachita baseball team lost 15-10 in 11 innings on Saturday afternoon to No. 19 Arkansas-Monticello at Rab Rodgers Field.

The four-hour game was the longest game of the season for Ouachita (10-26, 6-17 GAC) and it brings their record to 2-2 on the year in extra inning contests. Meanwhile, Arkansas-Monticello (24-9, 18-4 GAC) maintains their lead atop the Great American Conference standings.

Arkansas-Monticello got the scoring going in the top of the first inning with RBI hits by Sean Wagner and Andres Rios.

Down 2-0 going into the bottom of the first inning, Ouachita's offense stepped up to the plate. Tyler Riebock doubled down the right field line with one away in the inning. Kyle Alexander (Conway, Ark.) took a 1-1 pitch and smashed a two-run homer over the left field wall to tie the game at 2-2.

The Boll Weevils struck again in the top of the fourth inning. An error by Tee Collier negated a double play for the Tigers and gave Arkansas Monticello runners on first and second with no outs. Two batters later Drake Rowton hit a sacrifice fly to right field to give Monticello a 3-2 lead.

Collier redeemed himself in the bottom of the fourth inning with single up the middle to keep the inning alive. In the next at bat, Boll Weevils third baseman Jordan Johnson threw the ball over the head of the first basemen, allowing Collier to score from first.

The Tigers offense came alive in the bottom of the sixth. Ouachita loaded the bases with no outs and Collier came through with a two-RBI single to left field to take the lead. Cade McBride scored on a wild pitch to make the game 6-3. Louis Steen tacked on another run to give the Tigers a 7-3 advantage going into the top of the seventh.

The Boll Weevils offense roared to life in the top of the eighth inning, scoring six runs off five hits. The six-run outburst gave Arkansas-Monticello a 9-7 advantage.
Wagner hit a homerun to left center field to give the Boll Weevils a three-run cushion going into the final half inning of play.

With two-outs in the bottom of the ninth, the Tigers got the two-out rally they were looking for. Aaron Studdard was hit by a pitch to bring in a run and made it a two-score game. Steen came up to the plate and hit a bloop single to center field to tie the game at 10-10.

The Boll Weevils took the breath out of the crowd at Rab Rodgers field as they scored five runs in the top of the 11th to win the game.

The Ouachita rally came up short in the bottom of the 11th inning as the Boll Weevils took game one of the three game series.

Steen and Riebock paced the Tigers offense with three hits each in the game. Steen also had three RBI's in the contest.

Arkansas-Monticello had a trio of batters collect multi-hit days. Rios went 5-for-7 with 3 RBI's, Wagner finished 3-for-7 with 3 RBI's and Brady Weiss went 3-for-6 with 3 RBI's.

Ouachita starting pitcher J. F. Matros (Arkadelphia, Ark.) made his 47th career start today for the Tigers. Matros is now one start away from tying the GAC record for career starts. The senior from Arkadelphia exited the game after throwing 145 pitches in seven innings of work. Matros also struck out eight batters in the contest.

Michael Shepherd (0-2) picked up the loss after giving up four earned runs in the final inning of play. Dawson Moser (3-1) was the winning pitcher after pitching 3.1 innings in relief.

The Tigers and Boll Weevils will be back at it again in tomorrow afternoon starting at 1 p.m
