In 1975, Masterson was named the Most Valuable Athlete at the NAIA Indoor National Meet and competed in the World University Games in 1977.

After graduating from Ouachita, Masterson was a part of the Santa Monica Track Club 4×800 relay team that set an American record in the event. Masterson is currently Professor of Kinesiology at Missouri State University.
